Bettyjean Gamble Obituary

Bettyjean Gamble (née Newcomer) passed from the veil of tears to new life in Christ on September 17, 2020. She was born on November 29, 1926 in Pittsburgh. After attending local schools she graduated from Peabody High School. She was briefly employed by the government as a cartographer until her marriage to high school sweetheart Richard J. “Dick” Gamble in 1945. He served in the Navy and was based in Providence R.I.

After the war the young couple made their home in a number of places including a short time in California. Bettyjean was then employed by the Pittsburgh Trust Company (now PNC) where she worked through 1954. In the years following, Bettyjean devoted her full attention to raising her children, creating a delightful and happy home environment where each member was supported and loved. In 1964 Dick suffered a heart attack and Bettyjean returned to work at the Pittsburgh National Bank (PNC). She found her labors very satisfying- serving as lead teller at the largest branches and training many employees including the former President of PNC Corporation.

Dick and Bettyjean both left the workforce in 1985 to savour an active retirement. They enjoyed travel and time spent with family and friends. In 2003 her beloved husband passed away. Bettyjean retained an active social calendar after that from their apartment in Monroeville. Life slowed down for her when she moved to a retirement center in 2012. In her final months she suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. Now her once bright mind is clear again.

Bettyjean was predeceased in death by her parents David Bryon and Lois (Smith) Newcomer, her brothers Don Newcomer and David Bernard Newcomer and sisters Helen Neff, Bernadine Geesamen and Rhonda Reed. She is survived by her son Richard C. Gamble (Janice) of Gibsonia and her daughter Suzanne Gamble Doyle (Tim) of Pittsburgh. Also surviving are five granddaughters and four great grandchildren: Lindsey Gamble of McAllen, Texas; Liesl Kail (Zack) and children Portia, Ambrosius, Lucia, and Valentina of Larnaca, Cyprus; Whitney Gamble of Los Angeles; Hilary Gamble of Pittsburgh; and Gwenyth Gamble Jarvi (Austin) of Pittsburgh.

Family and friends will be received from 1 – 4 pm Sunday September 20, 2020 at Findlay C. Wylie Funeral Home 11311 Frankstown Road, Penn Hills, 15235. Funeral services will follow at 4:00 pm with Bettyjean’s Pastor, Cathie Smith, officiating.
