Bernard A. Gibbons (Popeye) 89 of Penn Hills died peacefully on March 8, 2024, surrounded by his family.
He was the beloved husband of 69 years of Mary Patricia Reynolds Gibbons. Son of the late Frank and Bertha Remlinger Gibbons.
Devoted father of Vicky DiBasilio (Joe Crowley, Gary DiBasilio {deceased 7/97}), Tracey Minardi (Rich), Cindy Berkshire (Bill) and Missy Gordon (Neil).
Loving grandfather of Tricia Trotter (Rich), Brennan DiBasilio (Eva Kernan), Michael Minardi (Liz), Rachael Minardi (Jay Magid), Joanna Smollock (Mike), Maddie Marrero (Steve), William Berkshire, Lilly Berkshire, Noah Bernard Gordon, Thomas Reynolds Gordon and step grandchildren, Joey Crowley (Jenna) and Christie Theys (Casey).
Great Grandfather of Mary Alice Trotter, Jane Louise Trotter, Tommy Gary Trotter, Anthony Minardi, Vincent Minardi, Francesca (Frankie) Minardi, Benjaman Magid, Jack Magid, Owen Smollock, Andrew Smollock and Camile Rachael Marrero. Step great grandfather of Cameron Crowley, Emmie Crowley, Karen Theys, Kennedy Theys.
Loving brother of Mary Catherine Arnold (Wayne). Popeye also leaves many “favorite” nieces and nephews as well as close family friends.
Preceded in death by siblings Francis Gibbons (Dolly), Thomas Gibbons (Rosemarie), James “Red” Gibbons (Sis), Margaret Bawden (Miles), John Robert “Dutch” Gibbons (Bertha).
Popeye grew up in the Homewood section of Pittsburgh, graduated from Central Catholic and married his high school sweetheart. He enlisted in the army, served two years, and raised his family in Penn Hills. Popeye enjoyed golf, traveling, hunting, playing cards, coaching St. Bartholomew CYO basketball and watching Pittsburgh sports, as well as never missing his grandchildren’s sports and activities. He enjoyed a fulfilling career with Great American Lines as safety director.
Popeye was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He always greeted you with a smile. He was kind, loyal, compassionate, and funny. He was devoted to his family, sports, and his Catholic Faith. He was a hero to his daughters, a favorite playmate to his grandchildren and devoted to his wife of 69 years.
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 12, 2PM - 4PM and 6PM – 8PM Findlay C Wylie Funeral Home, 11311 Frankstown Rd. Penn Hills; Funeral mass will be on Wednesday, March 13 10:30AM Christ the Divine Shepherd Parish (Saint Bernadette Church 245 Azalea Dr, Monroeville); Burial Saint Mary Catholic Cemetery, Penn Avenue & 45 St., Pittsburgh 15224.
